Sizing your new air conditioner in Vancouver WA can be tricky. The only true way to size your new air
conditioner or heat pump in Vancouver WA is with a proper heat/cooling load on the house. This takes into
consideration the direction the windows face and their Values, Home insulation values, elevation, Wind, Geographic location, and many other factors. This can be very difficult to say the least and not a realistic option for most home owners who just want to have an AC installed. The easiest way for a home owner to find out what size they need is to count the registers in the home. (Providing you have an existing furnace of course. Normally if you have an existing furnace and the ducts are already in place, you can only install an air conditioner that fits the furnace and the ducts. Any other size air conditioner will most likely give you problems or simply not do the job. If you count all registers and then take an average of 100 cfm for each register (Supply Registers only) you may find for example that you have 12 supplies. Average them out to 100 cfm per register. (This is a good number for residential heating and cooling for an average.) Now divide that by 400 and that is the size AC you need. Example 12 supplies x 100 = 1200 cfm Note: This is based apon averages. Now take the 1200 cfm divided by 400 = 3 this tells us that our ducts are capable of pushing air for a 3 ton with no problem. Now we need to look at the furnace and find out what the cfm is of the fan. If this fan will push 1200 cfm we are perfect. If your fan pushes 1600 cfm you may be able to install a larger ac yet the noise of the air in your ducts may be to high and cause problems. If the static pressure is to high your system can freeze and this is a major problem. If you would like a new air conditioner installed Call
